RE: The tariff classification of a cylindrical multicontact connector from China

Dear Ms. Smith:

In your letter dated October 28, 2013, you requested a tariff classification ruling. A sample was submitted with your letter.

The merchandise is identified as Item Number 73226, RCA Plug Adapter. Based on the information and sample you provided and the e-mail communications, the item is a coaxial multicontact connector. The item is comprised of a screw-on adaptor that allows cables equipped with an “F” type connectors to fit connections designed for RCA type plugs. It consists of a cylindrical pin made of Zinc Alloy with an RCA plug on one end and an “F” screw connector socket on the other. The item is equipped with a nickel plated metal shell with a Polyethylene inner isolation and measures approximately 1.25 inches long by 0.25 inch in diameter. This RCA Plug Adapter is designed to replace broken connectors on the ends of the RCA audio/video cables.

The applicable subheading for the RCA Plug Adapter, Item Number 73226 will be 8536.69.4020, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for "Electrical apparatus for switching or protecting electrical circuits, or for making connections to or in electrical circuits (for example, switches, relays, fuses, surge suppressors, plugs, sockets, lamp-holders and other connectors, junction boxes), for a voltage not exceeding 1,000 V…: Lamp-holders, plugs, and sockets: Other: Coaxial connectors; cylindrical multicontact connectors…: Cylindrical multicontact connectors." The general rate of duty will be Free.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
